As a vegetarian (albeit a rather naughty one who eats fish) never in my wildest dreams could I imagine reviewing a butchers! However lovely, kind daughter that I am, I recently agreed to pick up some items from the Martin Player butchers for my mother, and boy what a discovery.

As someone who does not frequent butchers I had no idea that their produce is not limited to meat. Martin Player stocks a wide variety of Welsh cheeses, preserves, and olives many of which are locally sourced. The olives in particular are far superior to any you could buy in the supermarket, I generally go for the mixed olives with chilli which have the added benefit of being stoneless (makes eating so much easier). What really made my experience at Martin Player great though, was discovering that they sell homemade apple chutney, which I have been after for a very long time and which, much to my disappointment none of the big name stores stock.

Whilst I can't personally pass comment on their meat, the carnivores in my family all swear by it, refusing to buy their pork chops from any other butchers. Finally Martin Player should really be commended on their support for the environment, by providing regular customers with free, environmentally friendly hessian bags, not a practice I've seen many other independent stores undertaking.

It proved difficult to locate an ethical butcher within a 10 mile radius from where I live but when we discovered Martin Player, it was well worth the task! Such a diverse, high quality stock at reasonable prices. Martin and his staff made me feel very welcome and were very accommodating when I had to ask for advice for certain chops. I have to pass Tesco on the way there and it's always a fulfilling feeling to know I don't have to go back there ever again. Thanks very much Martin! A rare and recommendable find.

This butcher is exemplary. I'm a stickler for a good butcher and I have to say that this is the best in Cardiff, and I've been to all of them (trying to find pheasant!), Excellent range of game, warm and friendly service and knowledgeable, helpful staff.

 have to say that "Martin Player Butchers" is top class. The meat is second to none and the extremely polite,friendly service from all make it a pleasure to shop there. I have never found meat anywhere to compare and feel so lucky that he is our local butcher. You certainly deserve your well earned reputation Martin. Keep up the good work all of you!

An absolutely superb butcher. Top quality produce from top quality sources. In this day and age it is reassuring to know the source of your chosen produce and its quality. Worth every penny, as is the advice / suggestions given. Excellent variety and choice. Wonderful service in a friendly environment.
